Just want to point you towards an organization called Village Harvest, run by a friend of mine, Joni Ohta Deserins: http://www.villageharvest.org/
It's a volunteer community that harvests the various fruit trees that still grow in Santa Clara Valley (which used to be all orchards) but are now mainly ornamental trees in people's yards and such. It's an awesome group, and what they harvest gets turned over to Second Harvest for distribution to those in need.
